Recently the Laguna team got an inside look at the Pomona College Studio Art Hall and their new SmartShop II CNC Machine.
‘The Art program helps students develop the skills and concepts they need to create works of art with an awareness of both the contemporary and the historical context. Our proximity to Los Angeles exposes our students to the work of a great range of artists and artist practices and institutions. We offer courses in sculpture, painting, drawing, photography, and digital art. All of these are defined broadly, and students often work in forms that combine media and take the form of installation. Students can take advantage of courses offered at the other Claremont Colleges. Classes are small and emphasize interaction with professors. The Art curriculum culminates in an exhibition of majors’ work during their senior year at the Pomona College Museum of Art. Our facilities allow students to work in a tremendous variety of 2D and 3D forms. The Art faculty represents a group of productive contemporary artists whose practices range from photography and public art pieces to sculptural installations, performance, computer art and conceptual drawings. The Pomona College Art Department is now using a new Laguna Smartshop2 CNC Machine to aid in the creation of furniture and sculptural art.
Professor Michael O’Malley and his art students in the furniture design course are creating unique and artful creations which break the boundaries of traditional furniture design thanks to the abilities of the Laguna Smartshop CNC machine.
Pomona College also has a fully equipped traditional woodworking shop for the perfect blend of “old school new school” woodworking capabilities.
The future of woodworking is well underway at the Pomona College arts program and Laguna Tools is proud to be a part of their creative process!
