Customers of Laguna Tools use their machines with materials that range from metals to wood to composites. But perhaps the coolest use of a Laguna Tools machine is found in the work of Ron Meyn, a professional ice sculptor since 1999. Meyn as owns and operates Millennium Ice and The Ice Store, located in Huntington Beach, CA, since 2011.
Millennium Ice has used a CNC machine since 2002 to fashion ice sculptures, dishes, centerpieces and a dazzling assortment of other creations made out of frozen water. Based on his experience and requirements, Meyn purchased a Laguna Tools Swift 4X4 machine in December of last year. As an experienced user of CNC routers (since 2002), Meyn’s high expectations for the new machine were not only met, but exceeded.Says Meyn, “Yes, what I do is rather unique. But like many businesses, time is money for me. The Laguna Tools machine cuts my production time in half and allows me to make more money.”
continues Meyn, “I saw and liked Laguna Tools’ features and pricing before we moved to our present location. So I visited their facility in Irvine and bothered Steve Alvarez a lot,” he laughs. “I wanted a machine I could pay cash for and, as they say, good things come to those who wait. Laguna Tools ran a sale on used equipment and I bought a machine that had been used as a trade show demonstrator.”
Meyn also had reasons for choosing a Laguna CNC that went beyond price. “I considered buying a machine overseas. But I wanted local access to warranty service, parts and technical advice, even though my experience lets me run almost any CNC machine.”The way Meyn uses his Swift 4X4 is an interesting story in itself. “We carve ice with the machine in the freezer,” he points out. This installation, the first for Laguna Tools, required minimal modifications to adapt the unit to freezer room tempera- tures. “Laguna Tools has implemented several suggestions I made to them for improved performance in cold environments. What’s more, they’ve sold several machines based on my posts on Facebook.”
Concludes Meyn, “Our Swift is worth its weight in gold to us. So I can definitely see additional Laguna Tools’ machines in our future. They’re inexpensive, but not cheap, super accurate and very sturdy. Some carvers use cheap hobbyist machines and their lack of quality is obvious.” What also seems obvious is the value of investing in a Laguna Tools CNC router. The superior quality at an affordable price makes it the right choice, whether you use it at room temperature, or far below it. Laguna Tools Swift CNC Router Series features a work envelope of 48″ x 48″ and includes an industrial-grade liquid-cooled electrospindle.
