“No question, the CNC SmartShop from Laguna Tools has instantly made us leaner and greener,” said Hayden Hiatt, Vice President of Development. “Our company’s reputation depends on delivering designer pieces of furniture to top retail operations that are as ‘green’ as they are solidly built, and the CNC SmartShop is playing a huge role in that effort.”
A tremendous amount of “green” technology goes into every upholstered loveseat, sofa and sectional manufactured at the company’s Southern California–based, 100,000-square-foot facility. But the real story lies beneath the upholstery. For example, instead of using petrochemical-laden plywood, the company incorporates environmentally friendly CornBoard – a renewable U.S. resource comprised of corn byproducts. “We use the 4-by-8 sheets of CornBoard for framing, and the CNC SmartShop makes short work of them,” said Hiatt.
“It used to take us an hour or longer to cut a single frame for one of our products. With the CNC SmartShop, we can do the job – including curves and the most intricate angles – in about 20 minutes. That increased level of productivity positively impacts labor costs and will keep us very competitive.”
Hiatt says the CNC SmartShop also allows them to drill precisely spaced holes for tufting on headboards, as well as cutting doublewide arms. “We could never cut them as one piece in the past, which meant using staples. The router also allows us to do notching, enabling us to use mortise and tenon joints in our assembly, further increasing quality and durability. We could not do this degree of precision work so quickly before acquiring the SmartShop from Laguna Tools.”
From using Bio-Soybean-based foam and recycled steel and fabric, to padding made from recycled plastic bottle fiber, Hiatt is proud that every component comes from the United States and that every piece of furniture is built from scratch in Southern California. “That’s why it’s a pleasure to do business with another Southern Californian company like Laguna Tools, which takes the same pride in its product lineup and customer service as we do.”
Huntington Industries is in the process of digitizing decades of invaluable furniture patterns and distinctive designs, once kept in countless filing cabinets, to the CNC’s robust computer system. “The CNC SmartShop just makes us tremendously more efficient in so many ways,” said Hiatt, who is currently operating the unit himself so he can train other employees as production increases.
“Our goal is to reach 1,200 frames a month, which has become a very realistic target, thanks to our new SmartShop CNC.”
Hiatt said he spent months researching various CNC machines on the market before deciding on the SmartShop from Laguna Tools, which is based in Irvine, Calif. “We were looking at CNC equipment costing $100,000 to $150,000, tens of thousands more than the SmartShop, without all of the features and impressive fit and finish that Laguna Tools offered,” he said. “I was immediately struck by the precision components and solid, one-piece, tubular welded frame construction of the SmartShop. It’s as solid and user-friendly as it is technologically advanced.”
Hiatt says he’s equally impressed with the level of service he’s received after the sale from Laguna Tools.
“Laguna Tools gives us a great deal of confidence that we’ll always meet our production objectives,” he said. “When I have a question, I get an immediate response either from Steve Alvarez, their CNC Sales Manager, or ‘Router’ Bob Alsup, a software engineer at Laguna Tools, who is really a great go-to guy for technical support. This is the type of ‘value-added’ I doubt we would have received from another company, and another reason why I’m more than happy to recommend Laguna Tools to my colleagues.”
