Erick Nathan is a master craftsman who actually wants people walking all over his fine works of art. An actor first and foremost, he’s turned his traditional flooring company into a woodworking venture that turns floors into art.
“People think nothing of hanging works of art on their walls,” said Nathan, who has appeared in over 18 independent films. “I’m just creating works of art that people walk on.”
Nathan’s spectacular hardwood flooring designs run the gamut of his fertile imagination, but instead of using paint and canvas… he uses a wide range of exotic hardwoods, including Australian Lace Wood, Curly Maple, White Oak Quartersawn, and African Wenge. He also incorporates stainless steel, copper, brass, concrete and other materials.
The results are high-end floors that his clients love, and also come close to satiating his creative appetite when he’s not on the set.
“While I enjoy creating practical uses for my woodworking art, my passion is acting,” said Nathan, who was literally raised working in his father’s flooring business. “There’s a glut of flooring contractors on the market these days, each trying to outbid the other… and I don’t want any part of that any more. The good news is that I have found a specialty niche for people who want totally distinctive, one-of-a-kind floors and furniture. It’s a satisfying creative outlet between movies…. or until I become a superstar.”
Nathan, who trained at Second City Chicago doing improve, is currently in the process of setting up a new woodworking shop to meet the expected demand for his flooring and furniture art, which includes such memorable pieces as dramatic suspension beds.
The shop is being outfitted almost exclusively with machines from Laguna Tools in Irvine, including an LT16 HD Bandsaw, a 1 ¼” Resaw King Bandsaw TBlade, HX310 Pro Combination Machines, the Platinum Series 20” Disk Sander with Stand, the Platinum Series 18-47 Lathe, 2 and 3 hp Mobile Cyclone Dust Collectors, a 20” Planer with Shear Tech 11, the Pro Series Oscillating Edge Sander and an IQ CNC Router.
A former stand up comedian in the Chicago , the multi-talented Nathan says he researched the woodworking equipment for his shop online.
“I was very impressed with the quality and prices I saw on the Laguna Tools website. Honestly, what sold me were the video demonstrations by Jay Andrews. I just liked the way he explained the equipment.”
Nathan received his acting training at the prestigious bi-coastal American Academy of Dramatic Arts in both New York and Los Angeles. His long list of acting credits include; King of the Avenue, The Caged Animal, The Hit, Hoboken Hallow and many others. And while acting remains Nathan’s number one passion, creating truly memorable works of flooring and furniture art supplements both his income and creative needs between roles.
“My father would have been thrilled and smiling right now with the flooring and pieces I’m creating,” he said. “He passed some time ago, but I wouldn’t be able to do any of it had he not taught me everything he knew.”
